Anxiety vs. Depression: How to Tell the Difference
By Counseling & Treatment Center of Utah · 2025-01-15
Anxiety and depression are the two most common mental-health concerns — and they frequently travel together. Understanding how they differ can help you describe what you’re experiencing and find the right support.
The core difference
Anxiety tends to be future-focused: worry, restlessness, a racing mind, a sense of dread. Depression tends to be present- and past-focused: low mood, loss of interest, heaviness, and fatigue. Many people experience both at once.
When to reach out
If worry or low mood is interfering with your sleep, relationships, work, or daily life — or simply lasting longer than feels okay — therapy can help. You don’t have to wait until things feel unbearable.
Frequently asked
Can you have anxiety and depression at the same time?
Yes, very commonly. Treatment addresses both, and improving one often helps the other.
