Teen Therapy: Signs Your Teenager Could Use Support
By Sophie Mickelsen, ACMHC · 2025-05-04
Adolescence is turbulent by design, which can make it hard to tell ordinary ups and downs from something that needs support. Here are signs worth paying attention to — and a gentle way to start the conversation.
Signs to watch for
Reach out if changes are lasting, intense, or interfering with daily life:
- Withdrawal from friends, family, or activities
- Big shifts in mood, sleep, or appetite
- Slipping grades or school avoidance
- Talk of hopelessness or self-harm
How to bring it up
Lead with curiosity, not alarm. Let your teen know therapy is a normal, private space to sort things out — not a punishment or a sign something is “wrong” with them.
