What to Expect at Your First TMS Session

By Stephen Hurd · 2026-03-25

Starting something new can feel intimidating — especially a brain-based treatment. The reality of TMS is reassuringly ordinary. Here’s exactly what happens at your first visit so you know what to expect.

Mapping your first session

Your first appointment is a little longer because we “map” your treatment. We find the right spot on your head and determine the gentlest effective dose for you. You’re awake and comfortable the whole time.

A typical session after that

Each session, you settle into a chair, we position the device, and NeuroStar delivers pulses in short cycles. You might feel a tapping sensation. In about 18–20 minutes you’re done — and you can drive yourself home and return to your day.

Frequently asked

Can I listen to music or relax during TMS?

Yes. Many people read, listen to music, or simply rest. You’re fully awake and in control.
